We all want our children to grow up with good values. We want them to spend less time on screens, behave respectfully, be kind to others, and treat elders with respect.
But children don’t learn these qualities from our instructions alone. They learn by watching us.
If we want our children to speak respectfully, they need to see us speaking respectfully.
If we want them to be kind, they need to see us showing kindness.
If we want them to respect others, they need to see us treating people with dignity.
And if we want them to have a healthy relationship with technology, they need to see us put our own screens aside and be present with the people around us.
Children observe the little things we often don’t realize they notice—the way we respond when we’re angry, how we speak about others, how we treat people who disagree with us, and how we behave when nobody is watching.
Our actions become their examples. Our habits can become their habits.
Parenting isn’t only about telling children what is right. It is also about becoming the example we want them to follow.
Let’s not just raise children with good character.
