When We Expect Grace but Give Harshness

It is easy to notice when someone’s words hurt us. We remember the tone, the criticism, and the way those words made us feel.

But sometimes we forget to examine our own words toward others. We may expect people to be gentle with our mistakes while feeling free to speak harshly about theirs.

We may consider our own criticism “honest” while seeing even a small criticism from someone else as disrespectful. That is where self-awareness matters. If a few words can wound us deeply, we should remember that our words can leave the same kind of mark on someone else.

Fairness begins when we hold ourselves to the same standard we expect from others. Before reacting to someone’s words, it is worth asking whether we have been equally careful with theirs.Kindness does not mean avoiding every difficult conversation. It means speaking truth without using harshness as a weapon.

“If a small word can hurt you, what makes you think harsher words won’t hurt someone else?”
